Residents challenged to beat Neighbours’ Day success*
22/03/2010
Mancunians are being called upon to make this spring’s Neighbours’ Day celebration even more successful than it was last year.
Manchester City Council approved a record 159 applications last year from residents who wanted to get to know their neighbours better by holding street parties, barbecues, gardening events and other activities across the city.
Now, the call is going out for residents to beat that figure by arranging events to bring people together.
And the City Council is making grants of up to £200 available to neighbourhood groups who want to organise events on or around Friday May 28.
The project also links into the City Council's year-long Proud Of Manchester campaign, which celebrates life in the city and encourages residents to get to know their neighbours better.
Councillor Val Stevens, Deputy Leader of the Council, said: "We had fantastic feedback from residents last year about how Neighbours' Day got people together at street parties, barbecues and planting and clean up days.
"Everyone had a good time in 2009, and we hope residents will be even more keen to get behind it this year.We know how much communities put into making Manchester a place to be proud of and so we're delighted to support this again."
Last year one of the groups which celebrated Manchester Neighbours' Day said: "It was a great feel-good day and everyone got a buzz out of it."
