Be Proud, Love Manchester. 2010 Launch Event
25/02/2010
Sunday 14 February marked the 2010 launch day of Manchester's "Be Proud" campaign, a year long programme of events and activities.
The launch took place over three locations: Fallowfield, Longsight and Gorton, with a wide variety of activities.
In Fallowfield students from the University of Manchester, and the charity Green Machine spent three days getting involved in activities aimed at increasing a sense of neighbourliness, community pride and building relations between students and permanent residents. This culminated in a planting and cleanup event in Platt Fields Park.
Meanwhile, in Gorton’s Sunnybrow Park, 600 metres of hedgerow were planted by volunteers taking part in a “seed-dating” (speed dating!) event.
Red Rose Forest teamed up with national charity Trees for Cities (see the link below) to plant the hedgerows around the perimeter of the park, reinforcing park boundaries, encouraging biodiversity and providing a habitat for the park’s wildlife.
Finally in Longsight, at Rushford Street, almost 500 local residents came to enjoy sporting activities on the school playing fields. These included football coaches from Manchester Academy, penalty shootouts with Moonchester (Manchester City’s Mascot) but the highlight was a BMX stunt display by World Champion Stunt Rider Keelan Phillips!
Thanks to ASDA Longsight and Tesco Gorton for their support of these events.
